What To Do If Your Roof Is Damaged by a Storm

Your roof plays an important role in protecting your home and its contents from damage by wind, rain, sun and falling debris. When your roof is damaged by a storm, its ability to provide this protection may be compromised. These are some steps you should take when your roof has been damaged by a storm.

Assess the Damage

Before you can do anything about it, you first need to find out the extent of the damage to your roof. Walking around on your roof can be dangerous and lead to injuries from falls and other accidents. For this reason, it is better to hire a professional roof inspector to do this job. Roofing companies have training and insurance works Idaho coverage that protects employees from potential injuries.

Make Temporary Repairs

If your roof is leaking or there is an obvious opening, you may need to make temporary repairs to prevent more damage from occurring while you wait for the roofing company to make permanent repairs. If your roof has a leak, move anything valuable that is under the area that is leaking and place a bucket or garbage can under the leak. Hire a tarping service to cover the damaged area on the roof to protect it from wind and rain.

File an Insurance Claim

If you have substantial damage to your roof, it is a good idea to file an insurance claim early in the process. Large storms can result in a large number of claims that may keep your insurance company and area contractors busy. The earlier you file your claim, the faster you are likely to be able to get your roof repaired.

If your roof has been damaged by a storm, it is important to take prompt action to protect your home from additional damage. Taking these steps can help you get your repairs completed and minimize the amount of additional damage that occurs while you wait.
